Some crazy bidders on eBay are paying $226 for a color photo of the Westvleteren 12 gift pack. Are they being duped?
It’s hard to say. The title of the listing says “photo” at the end and while the description goes go into detail about how rare the beer is it also clearly states that they are bidding on a color photo:
Westvleteren XII (12) RARE Collectible. This Color Photo is of the one time released Gift Pack of what is known as “The Best Beer in the World”. This was a very limited, one time release, of this very fine beer. It is now SOLD OUT everywhere. I am selling this photograph only here on eBay as the rules and regulations do not allow the sale of beer online unless you are a licensed dealer. I had a listing for the real item, the listing was removed this morning due to regulations, ( you can contact me through my email ,danmazzaro at gmail. As you are probably aware, this Special Release Westvleteren XII gift pack was selling for up to $700. You can now have a Color 5”x7” Photo of this VERY RARE item!
I do think that the seller is being intentionally misleading with how much he emphasizes the beer while only mentioning that he is selling a photo a couple of times. Is this fraudulent? Let me know what you think in the comments.

Sierra Nevada / Russian River Brux
A: Brilliantly crystal clear dark straw color. Two finger head dissipates in seconds leaves no lacing on glass. Consistent bubbles from the carbonation give it an appearance similar to a darker champagne.
S: Light citrus / white grape aroma, probably from the hops and wild yeast. Maybe Sorachi hops? Some sour background notes and a bit of a flour or bread smell. Slight funkiness from the wild yeast.
T: Carbonation attacks the tongue Bubbles dance across the palate. Strangely there is a mild alcohol hotness, even though the beer is only 8.3% alcohol. The beer is very dry, though. Almost no malt back bone and low bitterness, which makes it difficult for the alcohol to hide. Slight breadiness in the middle and ends on a low acidic sour note. Not a lip puckering sour, just a pleasant sour aftertaste.
Overall: To borrow a phrase from a well-known macrobrewery I would call this the champagne of beers. If you enjoy a nice dry champagne with that bit of a sour kick at the end then you’ll enjoy this beer. If you don’t like dry champagnes - or dry beer for that matter - then stay away. This isn’t my particular cup of tea, but I can see how some might enjoy it. If this beer had a thicker mouthfeel and more brett character it would be a lot better.

Westvleteren 12, widely regarded as the best beer in the world, goes on sale tomorrow. Here’s where you can get it.
Here’s the official word. Apparently Georgia isn’t on the list as it apparently released early there.
If, like me, you haven’t had it before, this is your shot to get it without having to do a swap, pay ass-rape grey market price, or fly to Belgium. Allegedly everywhere but Hawaii it will be $84.99 for the brick. Places were going to ask more, and I guess Shelton Brothers clamped down on them. Looks like no one is really going to make a profit on this outside of the Abbey, and the Abbey isn’t looking to get rich, but renovate. I’m fine with that. But I guess in Hawaii the shipping is obviously more so it’ll be more expensive.
But I digress. If you want it, this is where you can get it on 12/12/12.
On December 12, 2012 (12.12.12) the Westvleteren XII “Brick” (gift packs) will be available for sale in the US for the first time. Below is a list of retail locations where these Bricks will be for sale. Each Brick contains six 33cl bottles of Westvleteren 12º beer and two special tasting glasses. This is a special one-time only release. It might sell out right away on December 12th. No advance reservations are accepted via this website. This list is only to help make the search easier for those that wish to purchase a Westvleteren XII Brick. Suggested Retail Price is $85.00 per Brick.

Just got word from the local beer shop I frequent. Shelton Bros never got labeling approval for Westvleteren 12 in Virginia, so the state will not be receiving any. Looks like a hike up to Total Wine in Laurel, or hoping for a swap, is my only option. So be it. He told me 6 months ago when I asked that there was a good chance this would be the case (no distribution in VA).
Same goes for Pennsylvania. What a sad day.

Drinking beer is good for you and your children, a study by Japan’s oldest brewery says.
Hops, one of the three basic ingredients of beer along with water and barley, contains a chemical compound called humulone, which can help the human body fight the virus that causes the common cold in adults, according to a report by the news agency Agence-France Presse. The same virus also can cause bronchitis and pneumonia in children. With vaccination for these illnesses has yet to be found, the study by Japanese beverage giant Sapporo says that beer could prove a unique way of curbing infection.

Today is the 79th anniversary of the repeal of alcohol Prohibition. On this day I give you, not only the beautiful image above, but also this list, via the Economic Freedom blog, of items that the government still prohibits. I would probably add Buckyballs to the list.
